Blog Entryexcellence reflection session - BTCJun 25, '07 12:05 PM
for everyone

Standing in the badminton hall and getting scolded 9 years ago was where I began my life as a Rover. Today the same mode of conduct remains unchanged. Truly speaking, I'm not a person who goes for corporate ladder. However, there's this instinct that builds in me, telling me to keep moving on in whatever I'm doing. Other than playing warcraft, I made good use of my time reflecting many things at BTC. If you are from SP Rovers, please read on...

Time has indeed changed. As a full-grown Rover, I went through every single bit of Rovering during my poly days. It was sweet experience when I looked back. When we grow older, we always complain that the current Rovers has dropped its standard as compared to the past. And what have I learnt from this? We always look at the past and seldom people focus on the present. Standards are set by human beings. Others' expectations are as such b'cos they have been there done that. So if we set our own standards and call it RSS standard, no one will ever say that SP Rovers has no standard. It IS RSS standard.

Moving on, recruitment is always as issue nowadays. It is an issue not just in SP Rovers but the scouting world in Singapore. We ended off with 6 newly invested Rovers. Practices in the past was that there's only one investiture every year, and that has to be done at the beginning of the academic term during BTC. We set BTC as the "must attend" event and invest people without even giving them a chance to look back and consider. This system may work in the past b'cos people in the past can endure more hardships than now. If we carry on this similar "copy and paste" methodology, People nowadays, who cannot take so much from BTC, will naturally quit after that. Either they value the scarf so much that they will frame it up after that, or they will take it and clean their kitchen table as rag.

Seeking advises from many people who are more experience than me, they told me that it's time to step in even more and if necessary, takeover certain key appointments and govern it the proper way until it's ready to hand it down. It's a thin line in between mentoring and teaching. In my understanding, mentoring means to guide and advise someone to do the right and proper thing. Teaching means imparting knowledge. I still finds that teaching and mentoring are the way to go. These two words have its own meaning. Both are equally important. Taking over is not an option at all. The consequences is too great.

I've been involved in the RSLC for more than a year. No change can be seen yet but we are making changes everyday. We are blessed with having the privilege of 7 loyal Rovers who keep the club moving on fantastically well so far. We don't expect them to meet our standards as they have limited manpower to do tons of things. They will pioneer this change alongside with me and my team of rovers. Mentoring has been a great experience for me in this appointment. Holding an important role in my career link directly to my contribution in Rovers. Keeping the club alive is my mission since the first day I accept this appointment. The only thing that we have currently that will spur everyone's interest in the club is to work towards a common goal. We don't have politics like some other clubs do. We focuses on team effort everytime and working along this line will be the key towards success.

BTC has also served as a great teacher to me in my personal life. It takes away my daily routine and work, which I missed most. It gives me assurance on what I love to do most. I reflected a lot of things during the 3 days camp. Being able to serve people around me gives me a reason to live. I believe I can change things around me for the better. Lately I have been bothered by having the thought of death every now and then. I think I know the reason why is that so. If I were to die tomorrow, I will live on well today and treasure what I have yesterday. Do what you inspire to do most now and don't wait until tomorrow b'cos sometimes tomorrow never come.

Ever learning, ever changing...
